In fact, two of these animals are so dumb that they are almost extinct. This article explains the true reasons they are dumb.
From animals that bury its head inside the sand, thinking that would prevent predators from seeing them to an animal that freezes up when feel threatened as well as an animal that makes a sound to be seen by predators and much more.
These are the top 10 world's dumbest animals 2024 (lowest Iq), they are,
- Ostrich
- Koala
- Turkey

10. Lemming
Scientific name: Lemmus lemmus (Norway lemmings)
Habitat: live in underground, spruce-fir forests, & open
tundra areas
Range: Siberia and North America
Lifespan: 1 to 3 years
Lemmings are small rodents that are endemic to the arctic region. As small as their size is, they are extremely aggressive and they will not run from predators but will attack, even attacking humans.
Possibly, you have heard of lemming as a term used for someone so ignorant that they would prefer blindly follow a group of people into a dangerous scenario than consider their options and act intelligently.
That is the view most people have about this animal. However, unlike the common misconception about lemmings, that they always jump cliffs or try to commit suicide, that is not true.
They generally do have a large population, and when this population is too high, a large part of the population will seek a new home.
While they doing this, this group will tend to cross any obstacle across their ways, such as a river or cliff. So while doing this, some may die, and that will not others from following the survive one in the same path.
But that is not suicide. Only that they are not bright enough to think of going back. This makes them one of the dumbest animals in the world today.

9. Killdeer
Scientific name: Charadrius vociferous
Habitat: large lawns, plowed fields, pastures, and other
long distance (area) from water and near water as well
Range: Canada and USA
Lifespan: 10 to11 years
It is certainly one of the dumbest animals in the world in the way it behaves in front of predators. Unlike other birds that will flee from predators, or conceal themselves as much as possible, this bird will not.
Instead, it will even come out very close to you and act fakely as if it has a broken wing. And also at the point its gazes at the predators, it will start dee-dee loud sounds and it won't stop, calling unnecessary attention to itself.
This is how it actually got the name, killdeer, that is from its shrill kill-deee call. Some still considered this behavior as being smart, since they draw attention away from their eggs and young.
But doing that also put them at risk, as they are saying my wing is broken and you can catch me, which they can easily be caught for real. This makes many people conclude they are dumb and they actually are. You can watch the video below

8. Goblin shark
Scientific name: Mitsukurina owstoni
Weight: 150 to 120kg (330 to 460 pounds)
Habitat: Oceans around the world
Range: Global
Lifespan: Up to 60 years
They are unusual species of shark found in the deep part of the sea. Its have many teeth arranged in multiple rows. It has a flabby body, hence its name, goblin shark.
They are solitary animals, active in the evening and night. Globin sharks have a rare behavior that cannot be seen in other fishes. They are very sluggish; they are among the world's slowest animals.
Their sluggish movement makes it hard for them to chase their food. This feature brings them to the list of the dumbest animals in the world.
However, their special extendable jaws compensate for that, as with it, they do have some extra bite. They stretch out their elastic tissue from their mouth to capture prey that just seems out of reach.
They are not dangerous to humans, as they have not been seen or
reported as threatening people. It is one of the ugliest fishes too, check it here.
7. Sloth
Scientific name: Folivora
Weight: 9 to 17 pounds (4 to 8kg)
Habitat: Rainforest canopies
Range: Central, South America, and Asia
Lifespan: Unknown
Sloths are known for being slow in movements as well as their metabolism. Sloth in Spanish is isoso perezoso, which means, lazy bear or sloth bear.
But in water, they are very fast, at least x3 of their movement on land. About 30% of their bodies is food, which is fermented leaves digesting. Their digestion is slow and it could take 30 days to finally digest their food.
They are considered one of the dumbest animals in the world in 2024 for being too slow. They are extremely slow because doing that means being careful.
Even though they might
be slow, they are shockingly strong; they have claws that act as hooks. With
this, they are able to live high on trees. Their being slow also accounts for
green algae as it covers their fur.
6. Kakapo

Scientific name: Strigops habroptilus
Weight: 1.5 to 2kg (3.3 to 4.4 pounds)
Habitat: Codfish, Anchor, and Little Barrier Islands forests
floors.
Range: New Zealand
Lifespan: 40 to 65 years
Kakapo is a large mossy green flightless parrot endemic to New Zealand. They are the only flightless parrot known. They look more like owls than parrots and that is what their name implies, an owl-face soft-feather in Latin.
Due to its dumb nature, it's almost extinct (critically endangered on IUCN red list) and just less than 130 of the birds remain in the world as they are among the rarest birds.
They are one of the dumbest animals in the world in the way they defend themselves when they face a predator. Instead of running away from a threat, this bird will freeze up, not moving away from the place.
It is interesting to see how they freeze up. They do this thinking they are defending themselves, whereas they are saying to their predators, “you can pick me up”.
This type of defense only works for eagle or hawk that use sight to hunt and not with other mammalian predators that smells their prey.
Even animals that run are still caught by predators, not to mention kakapo that stand still. Sadly, this has led to their number drastically reducing.
More to that, they
have a high sense of smell which enables them to find other kakapos in the forest,
this also enables predators to find them easily too. They are lovely birds as
they are very friendly, they are considered more of a dog than a bird.

5. Flamingo

Scientific name: Phoenicopterus roseus
Habitat: Estuarine lagoons, saline or large alkaline lakes
Range: South America, Southern Asia, and Africa
Lifespan: 40years in the wild & up to 60 years in
captivity
Flamingos are beautiful birds with bright pink or shades of pink feathers. Their groups are called a flamboyance. They prefer to use only one of their legs most times, even when they sleep, they sleep only on one leg.
They are listed among the dumb animals in the world in 2024 as they stand all around the day and sleeping on one leg as well. They stand in their habitat since there are little to no predators, so they may feel no need to move about like other birds.
Also, the way they catch fish in the water shows their dumb behavior. Instead of catching fish and raising their beaks upward, flamingoes will try to catch fish with their beaks upside down in the water, which is not smart.
One of the interesting facts about flamingos is that their eyes are bigger than their brain. This probably brings about their good eyesight. At the time they are hatched, they have straight beaks, but they start to curve as they mature.
Unlike other animals that get natural coloration, flamingos get pink coloration from what they eat. They feed mostly on brine shrimp and algae, these food contains carotenoids.
Carotenoids are naturally red, yellow, or orange pigments. So as they feed on these carotenoids, contained in shrimps and algae, their body metabolizes it, bringing about its feather turning pink. Their natural colors might be white.
Chicks that are white until they start feeding like other mature flamingos, then their plumage will start changing color to pink. From the time chick is hatch till the time they are old enough to feed like its parent, the chick feeds on crop milk.
Crop milk is a liquid secreted from the crop (part of a bird's throat) through its mouth. Both parents can produce milk which is rich in proteins and fats that are necessary for the growth of the chick. Even though they are large birds, they can fly.
4. Panda Bear (Giant Panda)
Scientific name: Ailuropoda melanoleuca
Habitat: Temperate forests high in the mountains
Range: Southwest China
Lifespan: 15 to 20 years in the wild & up to 30 years in
captivity
They have excellent camouflage as their hand and legs are black which help them to conceal well in their environments. They have vertical slits in their pupil's eyes like a house cat; this makes them different from other bears.
There are three main reasons pandas are described as one out of the dumbest animals in the world. The first reason is their awkward movements.
You will see them rolling and falling over things or horse toys. When they climb a ladder, they may get stuck, hanging on doors and making a fuss over bamboo stems.
The second reason is that they eat too much; they can eat about 14 pounds of Bamboo daily. They eat for about 10 to 16 hours each day.
Bamboo stems, leaves, roots, and shoots are their favorite meal. They eat other things like carrion, eggs, and small animals, they have carnivore-like digestive systems.
Their overeating possibly makes them poo for like 40 times per day. Lastly, they make funny sounds, one may expect them to make deep sounds always with their body size, and on the other hand, they do not.

3. Turkey
Image credit: Pedalkraft / Pixabay |
Scientific name: Meleagris gallopavo (Common turkey)
Habitat: widely domesticated
Range: a native game bird of North America
Lifespan: 3 to 5 years (wild turkey) & 10 years
(domesticated)
Turkey is listed among the dumbest animals in the world because they are not very bright, especially the domesticated ones. They eat, drink, sleep and get scared easily.
They get scared of anything even at birds flying over. The way the domesticated ones get closer to strangers also shows they are dumb. They may even follow strangers.
In addition, if they are placed in an area that is not fenced, they can easily be caught by strangers. Its wide-set eyes and awkward posture, also give the impression they are dimwitted animals.
If it is raining, they look at rain to the point they can flood away, they do not have the sense to run to a shelter. Apart from this, they are friendly. They are friendly and if you have one around you, you will not like to kill them for food.
The wild turkey can fly and they do sleep in trees. One of the fascinating facts about them is that you can determine their gender by their poop.
A female poop is spiral-shaped while a male poop is like the letter J. They
have better sight than humans, and their eyes are x3 sharper than ours. They can
also see at an angle of 270 degrees.
2. Koala
Image credit: PixelAnarchy / Pixabay |
Scientific name: Phascolarctos cinereus
Habitat: Open forest and woodland
Range: Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and a small
area in South Australia
Lifespan: 13 to 18 years
Koalas are cute animals and sleepy by nature. Koalas are marsupials that are they are pouched mammals like kangaroos and wallabies.
They gave birth to immature young ones that later mature outside the female's body in a pouch. Koalas have a small size brain, among mammals, their brain size to its body's size ratio is the lowest.
Truthfully, they are among the dumbest animals in the world, and no one is going to deny this. Their brain is smooth, and they lack a higher level of understanding and recognition.
For example, if it rains, they do recognize what rain is. They will stay there, under the rain, and be beaten by the rain. A smart animal will definitely run to a shelter, not in the case of a Koala.
Yet, they are able to adapt to survive, even living on toxic eucalyptus leaves. To some people, eating eucalyptus leaves shows they are stupid as the leave is toxic and add little nutritional value.
It takes more than four days to digest a leafy meal. On
daily basis, they sleep 18 to 20 hours per day. When they wake up, they move
slowly to a food source and then go back again. We still have them around today
because of human intervention in conserving them.
1. Ostrich-Dumbest Animal in the World
Image credit: Bluesnap / Pixabay |
Scientific name: Struthio camelus
Habitat: Savanna and desert regions
Range: Africa
Lifespan: 30 to 40 years in the wild & up to 70 years in
captivity
Ostrich is a unique bird, as it is flightless, fastest, largest, and yet, dumbest. It is undeniable that the ostrich is part of the dumbest animals in the world.
Although they can display respectable intelligence, their response to danger makes them stand out as the dumbest bird. When threatened, this bird will fall to the ground with their head and neck in front.
Sometimes, they may even hide their head in the sand thinking that predators will not see them. Although occasionally, they may run with their powerful legs. Their eyes are bigger than their brain, so it may require a microscope to be seen.
This perhaps accounts for them being dumb. Even the Bible at Job 39: 17 says of the ostrich as being "deprived of wisdom and have no share in understanding".
Verse 14 to 16 of the same chapter also says in part about ostrich, “her eggs, she leaves in the ground, forgetting some foot can crush on it… she treats her sons harshly, as if they were not hers, forgetting her labor may be in vain”. Also, there is a common saying among Arabs that, “someone is more foolish than an ostrich”.
