It has been fully or partially credited to Leonardo da Vinci, the Italian High Renaissance artist. Christie who sold the painting says it is an original work of Leonardo, but that fact was disputed by some.

was once believed to be a reproduction of a long-lost original covered in over
painting, but it was later found, cleaned up, and displayed in a significant
