The quest for beauty has to lead many women to follow dangerous modern trends. Every woman desire to be beautiful, having a nice shape is not a bad thing.
But the time, money, and effort women are willing to spend on their look is staggering. Social media as well as celebrities have so much influence on our society about beauty.
Wanting to have a perfect body at all costs has lead many women to go through serious pain, injuring themselves as well as others. Many had died because of their bad decisions towards beauty.
None of the following beauty trends is safe, they all have risks. Just as we know many make bad decisions about beauty during the Victorian era, generations to come will laugh at ours.
1. Eyeball Jewelry
Unlike other ways people wear jewelry, having Jewel in the eye, just like the way it sounds, is odd when it comes to wearing jewelry. In the Innovative Ocular Surgery center, Netherlands, some Ocular surgeons produce the jewel.
They create the jewel using platinum alloy. The jewels are of different shapes, four shapes precisely, music note, a four-leaved clover, heart, star, and euro sign.[1]
The cosmetic procedure involves implanting small pieces of jewelry beneath the thin clear layer of the eye, the conjunctiva, the clear white part of the eye. Ophthalmologists at the American Academy of Ophthalmology give warning of the danger involving the implants.
Specific risks include blindness from severe ocular infection or bleeding, subconjunctival hemorrhage (bleeding underneath the clear conjunctiva), perforation of the eye, and conjunctivitis [2].
2. Fake and DIY Braces
Fake and DIY (do it yourself) braces are nonmedical fashion braces mostly used by women. They are being bought from local beauty saloons and online [3].
The fashion trends are common in Asian countries like Thailand and are also gaining some ground in the United States.
Fake braces appear to look like real orthodontic braces while DIY braces are string or rubber band braces for shifting the teeth from their positions.
Fake braces might look harmless but they can cause serious mouth health issues since they are not created and inserted by a well-trained, board-certified orthodontist. These braces cause damage to the teeth' proper alignment gums, and jawbone can be destroyed as time passes
DIY braces are really dangerous because it applies abrupt pressure on the teeth which can indeed cut off blood supply to the tooth. As the teeth are fall short of blood supply, the tooth root will stop working, the gum will be harmed as well, in time, the tooth will fall out. [4]
3. Corset
The waist shaping corset is not new and is getting more popular these days. It has been in existence since the 16th century and it was very popular during the late era of Queen Victoria's rule over the United Kingdom.
A corset is firm clothing worn under clothing to make women's waist appear smaller, this gives the appearance of having curve hips and a larger bust (hourglass figure).
It is dangerous because it forcefully shifts the organ from its natural position, the upper organs move in an upwards direction, and the lower organs shift downwards, pressing together.
When it is put on, the wearer feels uncomfortable because it forcefully hugs the body. The way the corset holds the waist together restricts the diaphragm resulting in shallow breathing; this will therefore reduce the amount of oxygen taken in. This can result in light-headedness and even fainting. [5]
Acid reflux can occur as a result of food not digesting properly because of the corset being worn while eating. The wearer felt this way because the stomach, esophagus, and intestines are forcefully compressed. Frequent use of corsets can lead to waist and muscle weakness[6].
It
can cause skin irritation as well. Prolonged tight fastened to the skin often
result in chafing and rashes. As the corset squeezes the body, the corset
wearer may experience bone bruises, which are more painful.
Compression can limit the flow of blood and can also affect the nerves, which could result in sharp pain and numbness in the legs. In 1903, there was a report of a woman that died because of the use of a corset that was firmly fixed within her heart[7].

4. Glued Lip
For lips to appear as if it is fuller, some young women are
applying glue (both superglue and eyelashes glue) gluing their top lip over
their cupid's bow. On the 7th of September, @Chloehammock4, a TikTok user initiated
the hack.
There on Tiktok, she shows herself in a video using glue. She put glue on her upper lip, fanning it, and pressing her lip back onto the glue. The video got close to 8 million views, many TikTok teenage users imitate her, taking up the chloehammock4 challenge, posting their own version to TikTok. [8]
Applying glue, especially superglue directly to the skin is dangerous it can cause allergies and burn because of its exothermal heat generation. Glue ingestion is poisonous, applications close to the mouth is risky. [9]
Applying glue to the cupid's bow is like sniffing chemicals
in the glue. American addiction centers warn that inhaling chemicals like glue
is toxic can cause, tissue death, and even, sudden heart failure.
Inhalant abuse of glue can result in a condition known as sudden sniffing death syndrome, or the individuals can die from complications later in life. [10]
5. Heelless Shoes
Heelless shoes are platform shoes without heels or heels without heels, they are strange shoe trends, even strange to look at. In 2007, Antonio Berardi first showcase these shoes in his runaway collections.
For Heelless Shoes, the wearer weight is concentrated at the front of the shoe, because the wearer's feet rest only on a high platform, while the heels appear to hover, seemingly unsupported. [11]
The way the foot is positioned in heelless shoes is almost like a ballerina posture, walking on tiptoes. If the wearer dares to put pressure on her heel or mistakenly pushes backward suddenly, it will result in a spectacular fall.
Heels are there to stabilize shoes, even high heels such as stilettos have their own damage on foot not to mention high platform heelless shoes.
Lady Gaga
Walking in it makes the wearer lean forward which is bad for both back and foot. Health experts say that if these shoes are worn frequently it could lead to permanent feet, spinal and knee injury.
These shoes have been spotted on the red carpet with lots of top Hollywood celebrities like Lady Gaga, Victoria Beckham, and Kim Kardashian, which brings about its popularity [12]. These shoes are too risky to look trendy with, yet they are still in sales today.

6. Nipple Piercing
Nipple piercings have some serious health risks. Breast tissue and ear tissue are not similar. This makes nipple piercing riskier compares to ear piercing.
The earlobe is flat, it has strong areolar and
adipose tissue [13], which allows prick through. Nipple piercings puncture
sensitive skin that connects to a woman's milk ducts.
A nipple piercing has a higher risk of being infected than some other types of piercing because it takes a longer time to heal. It may take more than six months to heal.
Signs of infection include swelling, aches, redness of the pierced area, unpleasant
smell, and discharge of yellow, green, or brown discharge from the nipple. An
abscess that is a pus-filled lump can also appear on the nipple that got pierced.
Lactating mothers could experience problems with pierced
nipples. The milk duct of the pierced nipples could be blocked because of scar tissue
around the pierced area or nipple ring.
Some women feel that they experience more sensitivity after piercing, but there is no scientific research that proves that a nipple piercing will change the nerves in the area or increase nipple sensitivity.[14]
7. Mercury Lightening
Around the globe, women use mercury skin lightening cream to their skin to look pretty. The cream is particularly common in Africa, Asian, and Caribbean nations because lighter skin is considered attractive than dark skin.
Mercury skin cream production and sales are banned in the United States, though that has not stopped its usage in the United States.
Mercury skin lighting products are available online, on social media sites, and sold through mobile apps. Mercury in skin cream is effective in lightening the skin.
Mercury salt
inhibits melanocytes (skin cells that produce melanin) from producing melanin
(Melanin give skin its distinct color) resulting in lighter skin.
In reality, robbing mercury skin cream to the skin is not actually making the skin beautiful because of its toxic effects which include depression, tingling in hands, feet, or around the mouth. Mercury poisoning can also lead to problems with eyesight, hearing, or both.
Users may feel tired, weak, or have muscle pains. One
study shows many African women using mercuric chloride-containing creams were
diagnosed with nephritic syndrome ranging from one month to three years of
usage. [15]
The use of mercury cream is toxic not only to the users, people around mercury users are as well prone to ailments. At FDA, a senior medical professional and advisor say “Your family might breathe mercury vapors released from these products.
Your children might touch washcloths or towels that are contaminated with mercury. It could be as simple as touching someone’s cheek or face.”
Kids, unborn babies, in particular, must be protected against this toxicity. This is because they are very sensitive to mercury.
It damages the baby's brains since their brain and nervous system are developing. Lactating mothers ought to end the use of mercury creams as they can easily pass mercury from breast milk to the baby. [16]

Skinny jeans may look attractive to some because of its slim look, but looking svelte might come at a very expensive price. Skinny jeans can cause bodily damage. A 35-year-old woman trip and fall after feeling foot numbness.
She was lying on the ground several hours before she was found. Prior to the incident, she has been helping a family member to move house with skinny jeans. That requires many hours of squatting.
She remembered that she was uncomfortable and she felt her jeans tight more. From the examination, she had experienced paralysis of her forefeet (bilateral foot drop), it was even worse on the right side. Her jeans could only be removed by cutting them off. [17]
This woman suffered from a condition called compartment syndrome. Compartment syndrome is the swelling resulting from some stressors (such as skinny jeans and corset).
Normal venous drainage that leads to a back-up in blood circulation muscle contraction, fibrosis, and muscle shortening can result from persistent unrelieved pressure of compartment syndrome. [18]

Cosmetically, Botox is used to reduce facial lines in
people by temporarily paralyzing facial muscles. Botox is an injectable drug
produced from botulinum toxin type A. This toxin is a type of neurotoxin
generated by a bacteria named, bacterium Clostridium botulinum.
Botulinum poison is among the most dangerous and poisonous biological substances. Botulinum toxin, one gram of its crystalline form can kill up to one million people. [19] Botulism (deadly food poisoning) is caused by this very type of toxin.
Most women get botox injections to look attractive and to look less stressed. Although botox is poisonous, it is generally considered medically safe. Yet, there are still serious side effects.
Effects include headache, droopy eyelids, flu-like symptoms, and infections. Severe reactions such as facial pain, redness at the injection area, and muscle weakness are noticed in some people that got the injection.
Symptoms could be brief or could last several months. Since botox injection doesn't remove wrinkles, its effects are temporary, it lasted approximately four to six months, some women don't mind, they get repeated injections. [20]
